The Disarmament and International Security Committee, otherwise known as the United Nations General Assembly First Committee, is tasked with the prevention, mitigation, and resolution of global and regional challenges to peace and security.

Created in the aftermath of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Committee’s original focus was centered around the new security challenges brought on by the nuclear age. Since then, however, the committee has considered all security matters withing the scope of the UN charter. As a standing committee, DISEC only has the power to make recommendations. It has no means of enforcing it’s decisions. Draft resolutions created withing the committee (and other standing committees) are then voted on by the general assembly.
